Experience: Started on a Moto Morini moped from Boswell's H-D, worked as a purchasing agent for a bike wholesaler, ridden many different kinds of bikes. Currently addicted to the Hwy 129
Bikes Owned: 7?
Accessories: Vetter Quicksilver factory option fairing, hardbags, metal rear rack (with a homemade passenger buttstop made from a shaving kit), halogen running lights, bar-end mirrors.
Modifications: Updated shift linkage, Italian horns, Progressive fork springs, Koni rear shocks, rubber mount modification for the Quicksilver fairing (good idea!), interior lens brake strobe, blue dot, rigged wiring for rear signal runners, aftermarket headlight bulb, Batteries Plus sealed gel battery, Battery Tender, reupholstered seat, <pristine> condition 2nd fairing from Crow at Red Barn Beemers of Knoxville (He's a GREAT mechanic!!!), milk crate from Ohio, shortened windscreen, liberal applications of various reflective materials on bike AND HELMET!! I recommend 3M reflective (same as USDOT and trucker's)- anything to be seen, and not smushed.
Problems: various oil leaks, side and centerstands poor until modified, original tranny became intractably misaligned, eventually replaced with gearbox #2, just concluded the horn project with great results, still need bars 1" or so closer to go easier on my arms, hard bags require occasional repair, odometer takes a nap from time to time, short on one cylinder when wet (AAARGH!!) needs better brakes and a steering damper compatible with the fairing
Comments:
My first Beemer. Not a perfect fit, but the best I've had yet. Definitely the coolest bike I've owned. Pretty nimble despite the weight. Great for a day trip through Deal's Gap and on through to the magnificent Cherohala Skyway, with all the fixins. Need to fix the ergos/bars/leaks to reach true nirvana, plus a little more power, more brakes, yadayada and so on. (Anyone who's about 6' tall with experience changing out the bars, gimme an email.)
For Sale: FOR SALE/WANTED: I might part with the old Vetter Quicksilver fairing that came on it, but it has cracks on the frame mounts. It's still quite salvageable. LOOKING FOR: the molded plastic BMW factory headlight nacelle, which converts from a square headlight to the factory BMW round lens. ALSO: one or two latches for the hard bags. ALSO LOOKING FOR: the "frame side/mount" half of one of these hard bags, so I can work on a project.

Comments:
My first BMW, it's great. I consider it a very fine motorcycle, handles great. It has enough power, it's just not fast off the line. That's ok it's not a rocket :) The good part, I was away from riding for about 25 yrs. and this bike was my welcome "back" I'v put about 6,ooo mile on it since May :) By the way, riding is better than I remember... Past bikes: 125 Honda twin and a BSA 250 dirt/street.

Comments:
The last BMW I owned (20 years ago) was a R69s. I'm looking forward to getting this bike back to good riding form as inexpensively as possible. I would appreciate any tips about good buys in aftermarket headers and as well as referrals of folks who do good inexpensive paint jobs in the Philly area.

Problems: Engine seemed to misfire when at operating temp. Realized one choke was stuck half way open and other choke cable was not connected. Replaced choke cables-runs perfect (37,500 miles). Charging system weak when used for city driving; battery needs recharging every two weeks. Occasionally pops out of second gear when shifting into 2nd quickly. Gets stuck in neutral if you shift into neutral when bikes is not rolling; solution- roll bike a couple of inches and it engages.
Comments:
I love this bike.

6386982:

Modifications: K&N filter. Very interested in the rejetting I have read about on the register, or any other useful mods.
Problems: Very little, knock on wood! Grease in steering head bearing turned bad, looked liked honey and very stiff. 120-90 size back tire rubbed on drive shaft when first installed.
Comments:
Seat putts my but to sleep! Corbin told they didn't make a seat for it, but I thought I saw someone on the register had one?

Location: USA (California) -- Torrance, California
Experience: 18-yrs riding experience, sport riding and some sport touring
Bikes Owned: 8
Accessories: Stock BMW bags, got a great deal on a used pair at Marty's BMW Torrance, CA. Also a small windscreen, about chest high. "National Cycle Deflector Screen" $52.99 from Chaparral accesories in CA. 1 800 841-2960. Works great, breakes up the wind to about chest high.
Modifications: Works performance front springs, Helped the front end feel more planted.
Problems: A couple of oil leaks, the oil sending unit leaked where the plastic meets the connector. Also the oil filter gasket split on the top portion. Both times was able to limp home with about a quart lost. Side stand touches down when conering hard. I took some material off the sidestand tab. That along with the new front springs solved the problem.
Comments:
Agile, easy to ride around town, and lots of fun on the back roads. Handles good to about 85mph, after that, the feel is a bit vague, and you start looking for more horsepower. Unless you are looking to go over high mountain passes while riding double at 90 mph, or race Ducati 916s, this bike is more than adequate. What it lacks in horsepower and handling it makes up for in versatility and character. Any reports on performance improvements please e-mail me. Thanks
